The history of the English laungage really started when three tribes from what now is known as Germany invaded England in the 5th century AD. These tribes where the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes. before the invasion most of Britian spoke Celtic. But when the invasion happened most of the Celtic speakers where pushed north. some examples of words we got from the Anglo-Saxons are land, kiss, kind, path. as you can see most of these words are one syllabul words.
